Types of Mesothelioma

There are three main types of mesothelioma, depending on the type of cells affected. These cells include epithelioid, sarcomatoid and biphasic. Epithelioid mesothelioma affects the epithelioid cells, or cells that cover the internal organs of the body. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma affects the sarcomatoid cells, or supportive bodily tissue such as bone, muscles and fat. Biphastic mesothelioma has characteristics of both epithelioid and sarcomatoid mesothelioma. While all forms of mesothelioma have been widely documented, most cases are of the epithelioid type (50-70 percent). Fortunately, epithelioid mesothelioma also offers the most optimistic prognosis.
